Before DSCC 2011: Learning new Dassault keywords

November 7, 2011

The information overflow. This is not something surprising you. In many situations, we are not reading, but scanning keywords. Sometimes these keywords and their combination is quite important. I’m heading to Las Vegas this morning to attendDSCC 2011 conference. Yesterday, I’ve got my final media briefing agenda containing the list of recommended sessions and one-on-one meetings. So, what I’m trying to do is to learn from the keywords. Below you can find some of my thoughts when reading DSCC 2011 keywords .

Expanding PLM. It is a second year, Dassault is prepping to talk about PLM expanding beyond what it delivers today. Next wave. The key word here is “real life” or “lifelike” experience. The speech will be delivered by Bernard Charles, president and CEO of Dassault System.

PLM In the cloud changing your business. Interesting enough, “cloud talk” will be delivered by Microsoft, which confirms (probably) Dassault continues to focus on Microsoft’s technologies to deliver their cloud solution. My immediate open questions how it will correlate with AWS strategy announced earlier this year. Also, where is Google, Facebook and others in this story?

Collaboration and Industry Solutions. It is almost impossible to see any PLM agenda without word “collaboration”. At the same time, I felt an increased industry keywords favor. Together with traditional aerospace, defense and industrial equipment, I found references to AEC, High-Tech, Medical. The interesting question I have with regards to that is related to the “Social topic”, which probably will be covered under 3DSwYm umbrella.

DS Online platform. This set of keywords represent – ENOVIA. The speech will be delivered by new ENOVIA brand CEO – Andy Kalambi. It is clear – ENOVIA remains the platform for DS to deliver foundation for all technologies. I’m looking forward to learning more about how ENOVIA will evolve in the space between private and public clouds.

DS Rich Applications. This is a new keyword set to combine SolidWorks, CATIA, DELMIA, SIMULIA brands (or applications) together. Interesting enough, “application terms”. It looks like DS is following “applification trend” coming from consumer space.

DS Universal Applications.
Another keyword to define 3DVIA, Exalead and 3DSwYm. I haven’t seen this combination before. 3DSwYM (first presented last year means See What You Mean) combined with previous 3DVIA an Exalead (brand created out of acquisition search vendor Dassault made last year)

One of keyword, I found on the agenda – Engineering 2.0. Since it is introduced in the speech of Chad Jackson, I’m not sure it is something that belongs to Dassault products or technologies. However, I’m looking forward to learning about it too.

What is my conclusion?
I’m excited and looking forward to meeting lots of people during coming two days and dig more into new DS PLM Keywords. For the moment, it is just my thoughts…

Live from SolidWorks 2012 Media Event

August 31, 2011

I’ve been attending SolidWorks Media day in Dassault SolidWorks campus in Concord, MA. Actually, I noted- this is probably the last time event happens in the current SolidWorks building. SolidWorks is moving to the new Dassault campus in Waltham, MA. While the information about SolidWorks 2012 is under embargo, you can have a feeling of the event and some interesting information about SolidWorks install base, revenue growth, eco-system. I twitted most of these photos during the event. Nevertheless, I thought most of you can benefit from them combined in a single blog. Not everybody came to come to Boston because of Hurricane Irene a day before. However, you can see an impressive crowd in the meeting room.

Bertrand Sicot kicking off the event. The important message: SolidWorks is about evolution and not revolution.

SolidWorks is continued to develop the 3D professional market.

Nothing specially new, but this is how SolidWorks presented as part of all Dassault Systems’ brands

Key facts, revenues and install base.

Revenues

Install base

It was interesting to see the level of non-CAD product growth in SolidWorks portfolio. Today the numbers here mostly represents Simulation, Data management and documentation products.

Fielder Hiss, VP Product Management presents historical retrospective of SolidWorks releases for the last 20 years.

SolidWorks community numbers are impressive – 436 VARs and 750 partners.

The agenda afternoon included some very entertaining engineering experiments such as magnets, motor assembly and the hit of the day – vibration driven mouse robot.

Furthermore, afternoon agenda included SolidWorks 2012 Beta customers panel and a deep dive into SolidWorks 2012 features. However, this is where embargo starts.

In addition to that, SolidWorks was innovating in organizing new activities with SolidWorks execs (speed dating). 7 minutes round-table talk with exec. You can ask questions. After 7 minutes – rotation, execs are moving to the next table.

What is my take? It is hard to make a real comment and not to talk about the product. However, I think SolidWorks can play a significant role in the future transformation of Dassault Systems. How it will happen? Time will show.

PLM and Social Technologies Dating?

February 18, 2011

In my view, Salesforce.com has been discovered a significant bias towards collaboration and collaborative software. Since last year Salesforce made strong focus on development and acquiring of collaborative technologies. Dimdim andManymoon are just two latest examples of Salesforce acquisitions. I read the following article on Read Write Web blogSalesforce.com and Facebook Strengthen Ties Through Force.com Platform. I found this passage interesting:

Provide Technical design, configuration, development and testing of Force.com custom applications, interfaces and reports Model, analyze and develop or extend persistent database structures which are non-intrusive to the base application code and which effectively and efficiently implement business requirements Integrate force.com applications to other facebook external or internal Business Applications and tools Develop UI and ACL tailored to facebook employees and suppliers

What is behind this? The two companies are looking for app developers to write Force.com app for business purposes. Salesforce is an enterprise cloud leader. Facebook is a social network king. Both are interested in the opportunities coming out of this dating. Facebook is thinking how to proliferate into the enterprise space. Salesforce has an interest to make their social connections stronger. The last thing made me think about what PLM companies are doing in the social space.

PLM Collaboration and Social Dating

Product Lifecycle Management software vendors are developing so called "collaborative software" for years. In my view, the idea behind this software was good. However, the implementation cost and complexity weren’t appropriate. PLM needs to go outside the firewalls and make some "social dating" in Web 2.0 cafes. This is can be a good experience. I can see some movements in this space. DS 3DSwYm, PTC Social Product Development, Vuuch are examples of these "dating" experiments. The biggest problem of these dating, as I can see, is the try to take social technologies inside of enterprise product suites. The biggest value, in my view, is exactly opposite – to take "product content" out of current PLM databases. Fresh air will make some cleanup. The example of Autodesk Inventor Publisher for mobile is a right one. First make content available. Then magic will happen.

What is my conclusion? I found Facebook and Salesforce tie up interesting. This is a place for PLM vendors to learn, in my view. Try to invent yet another TLA won’t work anymore. Customers are looking for cool stuff similar to websites they are using during the weekend. Facebook may have some advantages here. Just my thoughts…
