PLM Prompt: Google Site API enables PLM collaboration?

September 29, 2009

Interesting blog post from Google Enterprise. Import, Export and more with Google Sites API. What turns Google Sites to much more configurable and available for customization and tweaks for different cloud based scenarios. Google Blogs comes with two scenarios:

1/Open/Import projects;

2/ SharePoint Move for Google Sites.

I’d not be surprised if small manufacturers will be able to check these capabilities for external collaborative needs. Just my thoughts. What is your opinion?

PLM Prompt: Enterprise Buzzwords or How Many Applications Do We Need?

September 28, 2009

Picture 2Interesting post few days ago. What is very annoying is the number of buzzwords growing in the enterprise system world. Do we really need all of them? Is there overlap? How many times you faced situation when you and your colleagues are using different words for the same thing?

Here is the short list (thanks to Improve Process Blog)

• CAD (Computer aided design) to support modeling of hardware and electrical/electronics
• PDM (Product data management) systems to support data management
• PLM (Product lifecycle management) systems to support workflow, engineering change, bill of material management, release to manufacturing etc.
• MES (Manufacturing execution systems) to manage work in progress on the manufacturing floor
• CRM (Customer relationship management) systems manage, track and organize its data / contacts with its current and prospective customers
• BPM (Business process management) systems provide process management capability with workflows
• SCM (Supply chain management) systems provide the ability to manage the entire supply chain and support planning, sourcing, manufacturing, delivery and return logistics.
• KM (Knowledge management) to support knowledge sharing of best practices and lessons learned.
• SRM (Supplier relationship management) to support managing vendor relations and lifecycle.
• PPM (Project Portfolio Management) systems used for analyzing and collectively managing a group of current or proposed projects.
• BI (Business intelligence) systems help the business acquire a better understanding of its commercial context.
• EMM (Enterprise Marketing Management) systems manage marketing’s end-to-end internal processes including Web Analytics, Campaign Management, Digital Asset Management, Web Content Management, Marketing Resource Management, Marketing Dashboards, Lead Management, Event-driven Marketing, Predictive Modeling etc.
• HRMS (Human resource management system) or HRIS (Human resource information system) manage all processes within human resources.

PLM Prompt: Integrated PLM and ERP – Killer Ideas or Controlled Innovation?

September 28, 2009

Picture 1Short prompt in the beginning of the week. I was reading post from BSW “Killer Ideas And Controlled Innovation: Why you need to integrate PLM and ERP?”. First of all, an idea of integrating PLM (back 15 years it was PDM) seems old. I remember myself in the early beginning of my data management activities around AutoCAD back in 1993, an idea of communication between design data management system and manufacturing systems was highly important. But, I think, this problem is still not resolved.

So, is it a killer idea? Or may be the successful approach in integrating PLM and ERP can bring real innovative future?

Just my thoughts.

PLM Prompt: Real CAD from Cloud is coming?

September 21, 2009

As it looks like, the first public results about CAD applications running from cloud are coming from Autodesk. My attention was turned by Autodesk Lab Twitch Product.

project-twitch-cloud

Welcome to project Twitch! This project is testing remote delivery of our applications over the Internet. The goal of project Twitch is to enable you to test and try the latest versions of AutoCAD, Revit, Inventor, and Maya without having to install or download the applications. These applications run remotely on our servers and are delivered to you over the Internet. You will use them in the same way that you would if they were on installed on your system.

The whole story reminds me phrase from Ralf Grabowski blog-”After 23 years in CAD, I’ve learned that nothing’s for sure — except maybe AutoCAD”. So, AutoCAD is going to be the first CAD on cloud?

Any comments?

PLM Prompt: Product Data Visualization in MS Excel 2010

September 16, 2009

Short Prompt. Excel, in my view, is the most popular engineering and product data management tools. I had chance to discuss Excel multiple times on plmtwine before.

PLM Excel Spreadsheets: From Odes to Woes

Why Do I Like My PLM Spreadsheets?

MS Excel is coming with a set of new visualization features, that I see as a an interesting additional capability for product data visualization. Take a look for more details on the following post in Microsoft Office 2010 Engineering Blog.

How do you see Excel future in the context of PLM?

PLM Prompt: Dynamic Business Application and Design Collaboration

September 9, 2009

During last week, I had chance to discuss PLM, Design and Business Process trends. The core idea behind was about how we can apply business processes in the context of design application and collaboration. I had chance to take a look on Forrester’s Dynamic Business Applications imperative. The idea of processes built for change as well as “context” is very co-sound, in my view, with designer work. Even most of Forrester analyzes were done in the context of MS Office application, I think it can be applied to Design Application as well. The core idea, if I got it right, is to be able to have flexible contextual information to make a business process decisions and this contextual information comes from interactive and visual communication.

What do you think about it? Does it make sense to define adaptable contextual design application that has an ability to inject business data?

PLM Prompt: Future of 3D CAD in Touchable Holography

September 8, 2009

Interesting prompt today. What do you think about future of 3D? What will be real immesrsive 3D experience? We are doing 3D on the screen for the last 25 years and recently started to try touch screens. But what about touchable 3D?

Take a look and enjoy this video. Do you see future CAD systems work this way?

PLM Prompt: Non-PLM as an opposite to PLM?

September 7, 2009

Picture 10Reading Vuuch post “Do Opposite Attract in Business Process?”, I decided to go future and think about opposites in PLM. And I have to acknowledge, this is hot topic, especially when you come to sales point, cost and ROI. I want to come later with more detailed analyzes of what non-PLM can do different, in my view and opposite to PLM.

My today, prompt is just initial set of questions to you:

1. What is opposite to PLM and how do you see it in the market (I believe non-PLM is not very attractive)?
2. Do you think companies that distant their offering from PLM strategies doing something different?
3. Can we make PLM from non-PLM pieces?

I’m coming with longer post on this later this week and meanwhile will be looking forward to your comments and thoughts.

PLM Prompt: Blender Open Source for 3D

September 7, 2009

Interesting prompt today – I’m looking on Blender Open Project for 3D Content creation.

Picture 9

I see such projects very promising for the future of 3D software and CAD is one of them. Until now 3D CAD was considered as pretty conservative space. Many people are considering 3D CAD  as almost marriage decision. Getting more toward Open 3D CAD space can be a significant change factor in this space. What do you think about it?

PLM Prompt: Google Image Recognition and Technical Documentation in PLM

August 31, 2009

Interesting prompt today came out of Google’s US7,580,568 “Methods and Systems for Identifying an Image as a Representative Image for an Article”. Thanks, Steven Arnold for his blog post and Overflight service. Google’s patent gave me context to think about existing product IP in the organizations and this is related to Image recognition technologies. PLM technologies are moving forward, but even if everybody will move to full 3D since tomorrow (which is not going to happen), organizations have lots of 2D data. To find good technology to convert this 2D data to something available can be a big deal in my view.

Just my thoughts… Best, Oleg
