3DLive, HD3D and demand for CAD/PDM immersivity

November 10, 2009

Few months ago, in this post, I had chance to discuss the future of immersive CAD and Data Management. Looking on the latest DE  article by Kenneth Wong, NX7 with HD3D: Where CAD Geometry and Lifecycle Data Mingle, I found it very interesting to couple it together with some of my previous thoughts. HD3D from Siemens PLM (announced month ago) and 3D Live environment from DS (introduced 2 years ago and embedded into DS V6 last year) clearly representing the answer on user’s demand related to immersive representation of data from both 3D environments like CAD system and data management system like PDM/PLM.

You can see on the next few slides and videos of 3D Live application from DS. The famous turn-table allows you to filter, search, browse and navigate on assemblies, parts and related information.

On the next few slides and video you can figure out look and feel of HD3D app from Siemens PLM. Use of visual tags helping user to snap and browse information related to 3D Models as well as filter and search data.

What I see as a set of common characteristics of this trend?

1. Use 3D as a basic user experience

2. Use Immersive 3D as an entry point to browse through product geometry and lifecycle data

3. Mashup metadata, lifecycle data and other related information

So, what is my conclusion today? Both, DS and Siemens PLM experience represents clearly customer demand to bridge 3D and non-3D information together. With some difference in marketing and product buzz around, I see an overall trend is to unified 3D and non-3D environment for advanced CAD/PLM users.

Open Source Threat for CAD

October 28, 2009

Open Source and CAD. Do you think something is going on in this direction? I had chance to discuss Open Source topic several times in my previous posts. But, actually, I almost never took an angle of CAD and open source relationships. The following article drove my attention yesterday.

Picture 23
What is interesting is that Open Source CAD alternatives specifically focusing on AutoCAD space. It will be probably obvious to remind you that in the past Autodesk made a revolution change in the CAD software space by moving CAD from lucrative and exclusive high-end environments to PC. So, should current CAD software vendors worry about Open Source threat? I don’t think so – not yet. However, in my view open source will come to the space of CAD too, and I see initial signs of movements toward this. My expectation that open source CAD introduction will happen bottom up, first will come as a mix of graphic and drawing tool and future expand in the space of mid-range CAD packages.

I’d like to mention few projects and systems in this space that I tracked so far – Archimedes project, BRL-CAD project, K-3D.

Another interesting project is Russian Nanocad is promoting ideas of of Open Software.

Picture 28
Separate thinking should be done around Google Sketch-Up. The product is free is available from Google. With Google’s general interest and focus on Open Source, it can be considered as an interesting option too.

Just my thoughts. YMMV.

3D Perspectives: Connect PLM with World Content

October 2, 2009

My new post on DS 3D Perspective Blog today.

Picture 13I’m sure you already had chance to see the new 3DVIA Mobile application, and  I’ll bet you find it really cool. However, all the discussions around mobile applications and 3D got me  thinking about a connection between two worlds created by this application – the virtual word and the physical world.

The virtual world – we live it all the time when using software to create  our products, designs, projects and models. The physical world is everything surrounding us. All products we design and manufacture will live in our physical world.

PLM Prompt: Future of 3D CAD in Touchable Holography

September 8, 2009

Interesting prompt today. What do you think about future of 3D? What will be real immesrsive 3D experience? We are doing 3D on the screen for the last 25 years and recently started to try touch screens. But what about touchable 3D?

Take a look and enjoy this video. Do you see future CAD systems work this way?

PLM Prompt: Google Image Recognition and Technical Documentation in PLM

August 31, 2009

Interesting prompt today came out of Google’s US7,580,568 “Methods and Systems for Identifying an Image as a Representative Image for an Article”. Thanks, Steven Arnold for his blog post and Overflight service. Google’s patent gave me context to think about existing product IP in the organizations and this is related to Image recognition technologies. PLM technologies are moving forward, but even if everybody will move to full 3D since tomorrow (which is not going to happen), organizations have lots of 2D data. To find good technology to convert this 2D data to something available can be a big deal in my view.

PLM Prompt: 3D on the cloud thoughts

August 18, 2009

Short Prompt- what will take 3D on the cloud? I was reading interesting paper Pictures in the Cloud by Kenneth Wong.

pictures-on-the-cloud

My conclusion is as following:

1. Traditional CAD will be transformed when move on the cloud.

2. Multiple 3D /CAD related services can be introduced in parallel with traditional CAD systems we have in use today.

3. 3D/CAD cloud services today can leverage unlimited computing capabilities cloud services can provide for different purposes (CAE, Visualization etc.)

So, what are your thoughts about it? Who will rule 3D /CAD services on a cloud? How proprietary CAD models and formats will be transformed as a consequence of this change? Do you think today’s CAD/PLM providers will keep leadership in this business?

Just my thoughts. Best, Oleg.

How We can Tag 3D CAD?

August 4, 2009

tagIn one of my previous post I discussed Tagging techniques and technologies. Historically PLM was very taxonomy and built on hierarchies nature. However, I think, in today’s world, we need to change approach, we are working with data. Tagging and Folksonomies comes to the play. So, an idea I want to discuss is potential possibility to tag 3D information similar, to how we can tag social bookmarks and photos on sites similar to Flickr. There are few examples of similar implementations I’ve seen.

SolidWorks Labs Tagger is application available for SolidWorks and allows you to put Tags on SolidWorks entities. Great idea. What is missed in SolidWorks tagger is to get initial set of tags from outside or produce tags from existing systems.

Another example of Tags I’ve seen in multiple GIS and architectural and topographical applications. GIS field has high adoption rate of tagging technologies, since GIS by nature requires a lot of tagging entities on the map. This is, probably, place where Tags were invented first time.

tag-cad-gis

I think, with movement of CAD and PLM applications to the web and cloud, adoption rate for tagging will grow up. In Web environment, people feel much more comfortable to <Tag> everything. My ultimate tagging solution will include the following 3 components:

1. Ability to general set of possible Tags for specific assembly/model/etc. User don’t need to spend much time to think about what Tags to use.

2. Use Tag natively inside of CAD/PLM environment to mark everything you need.

3. Query Tag-based interface that allows to bring market entities/sub-assembly/assembly/products/etc.

The following environment can be built-in user interface of existing systems. What do you think? I’d be interested to hear your feedback? Maybe  you had chance to see similar features in existing systems?

PLM Prompt: Will Google OS become platform for CAD?

July 23, 2009

Very Loud Prompt- Google building 3D hardware boost into Chrome.

Google 3D boost

Brad Chen, engineering manager of the Google Native Client said in his presentation - ”With O3D, we think we’ll be able to enable high-quality games, the kind you’re accustomed to seeing on consoles, as well as CAD (computer-aided design) applications” .

Since Google already owns SketchUp, I’d assume this will be first CAD system to run on Google OS. However, we can see a new circle of CAD competition on different platforms. In addition to today’s Windows vs. Mac OS, Google OS will come to the game.

Just my opinion… Oleg.
