SharePoint 2010 external list (BCS) for MOSS 2007 / WSS 3.0?

If you like the new SharePoint 2010 external list feature and the new Business Connectivity Services (BCS) and want to make use of something similar in SharePoint 2007 / WSS 3.0 to connect SharePoint lists (no web parts) directly to external data sources (with change workflow), please take a look at:

Paolo, Thanks for commenting. I'm not representing our company strategy in this blog. There is no DS products that requires Microsoft SharePoint for the moment. However, there are multiple ways to integrate SharePoint and ENOVIA products. My personal view is that integration of product development processes and SharePoint is not trivial task. SharePoint paradigm of simplicity can be easily broken when you'll apply complicated views and data from traditionally built PLM tools. So, as a result, it won't bring benefits to end users. Of course, there are many other factors - IT, management, corporate standards that can influence customer's decisions to merge product development and SharePoint tools. Best, Oleg

I believe that you need to differentiate whether you are talking about software providers or Sharepoint customers. PTC already develops a PDM product on top of Sharepoint for the mid-market, they support the idea of Sharepoint asa platform for PLM. We (Siemens) have a different approach by offering with our Teamcenter Community a powerful integration, which allows to publosh PLM information to the ad-hoc collaboration layer and to register the results in PLM. What is your company's position in this respect?

IMHO, it will be couple of generations of sharepoint to fully evolve as a PLM tool perhaps.. (esp. in BOM management) - Other features it supports (like workflows/versioning etc) sound promising though..
