PLM Prompt: Integrated PLM and ERP – Killer Ideas or Controlled Innovation?

Picture 1Short prompt in the beginning of the week. I was reading post from BSW “Killer Ideas And Controlled Innovation: Why you need to integrate PLM and ERP?”. First of all, an idea of integrating PLM (back 15 years it was PDM) seems old. I remember myself in the early beginning of my data management activities around AutoCAD back in 1993, an idea of communication between design data management system and manufacturing systems was highly important. But, I think, this problem is still not resolved.

So, is it a killer idea? Or may be the successful approach in integrating PLM and ERP can bring real innovative future?

Just my thoughts.

Best, Oleg

  1. Paritosh says:

Ontology is the best solution following standards like Rosettanet. OAGIS is key. This can be address using SOA.

  2. Paritosh, If I understand correct, Rosettanet is kind of process ontology on business processes and communication. Is it what you mean? In my view ontology is very broad term and implementation can be absolutely different. Best, Oleg.

    Hi Oleg,

Yes, I am put forwarding point of controlled innovation as there are many parameters that justify saying as controlled innovation. Out of which, Ontology would be the best to discuss in solution of PLM integration with Heterogeneous application because it adds more value in short time. I believe that SOA can really adapt in communicating Product related information in any stream in Supply chain environment which is the defacto manufacturing and Operations approach in globally managed Organization.

This can be done by following any globally accepted standard Like Rosettanet or OAGIS.

The rational in put forwarding is due to following reason

    1. There are many productivity related changes happening in PLM solution space and all these are on the lines of business process.
    2. Rosettanet has PIP 2A9, which exactly lays integration foundation for communication of Product design related information.
    3. Standard like PIP2A9 focuses on find, try, buy, design and build, which is based on today pattern of customer requirements.
    4. Due to existence of Best of Breed application (Package and Home grown) they can be effectively communicated using SOA framework.

    Regards,
    Paritosh

  4. Paritosh, Thank you for your insight. Actually, I’m in sort of disagreement with what you are saying here. I’m respecting what initiatives like RosettaNet did, but on the other side, I don’t have believe that big enterprises will be able to agree on something standard and acceptable for everybody. This is ongoing problem with standards. Everybody want’em, but nobody want to use somebody else standards. But, ontology(ies) can work also in case of standard disagreement… Right? Best, Oleg.
